Yoga has been a popular practice of focusing on the union of mind, body and breath for more than 5000 years, so it’s no surprise these teachings are now being offered in combination with labor preparation to achieve a natural childbirth.
Many yoga instructors believe it’s the ideal way to prepare for labour and birth, and for the immense transition into motherhood. Yoga positions and spiritual beliefs help women get in touch with their bodies and primal instincts to birth more comfortably.
Firstly, let’s clear a few things up. There’s the practice of using yoga during labor eg. using appropriate positions and stretches, but there’s also specific Yoga Birth classes (sometimes called Yogini Birthing) that are a childbirth education course.
“YogaBirth” operates in several countries and combine physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual aspects of birth preparation and the early postnatal period. The classes are set up as 2 hour drop-in style classes covering the following:
- Breathing awareness & sound
- Pelvic floor education
- Information about pregnancy and birth
- Preparation for labour & birth through yoga
- Refreshments and discussion
YogaBirth classes offer a safe, effective and integrated form of yoga, carefully adapted for you to practise from fourteen weeks of pregnancy up to the birth of your baby.
Another course offered is “The Yoga Birth Method” or also known as Yogini Birth was developed by Dorothy Guerra. She’s an author, doula, childbirth educator and also owns Fertility to Delivery Pregnancy Care Center in Ontario, Canada.
The Yoga Birth Method uses an 8 step pathway that allows women to follow a very specific routine of postures, breathing and mindful meditation throughout labor. It empowers woman to be in control of their bodies, connect to their babies and know how to make informed decisions during the labor process.
Each stage of labor has emotional and physical effects. In order to achieve natural birth or normal birth without medicated assistance, a woman has to understand what will happen in labour and have the tools to manage the changes as labor pain increases.
The Yoga Birth Method classes are taught in a group on 1 day and costs $145.
